The Norwegian Humanist Association decided in 2005 to establish a separate youth organization. "Humanist Youth" (Humanistisk Ungdom) was founded in August 2007. Currently Mr. Lars-Petter Helgestad is President of the Board.
Some 13 000 members of the Norwegian Humanist Association are below the age of 35. Traditionally there have been no activities aimed especially at young members. However, quite a few of the humanist confirmation course teachers are students. In springtime, which is the season for the confirmation teaching, young members have sometimes formed social groups in towns and cities, united by a common interest in teaching 14-year-olds.
In the last couple of years youth groups have been formed in some of the university cities. These groups consist of people in their twenties, and have created their own activities as well as attending meetings, courses and rallies arranged by others. There have also been summer camps, by the sea as well as in the mountains, popular with teenagers.
The Norwegian Humanist Association is a member of the The International Humanist and Ethical Youth Organisation (IHEYO). IHEYO is devoted to promoting the spread of humanism among young people, and is working together with many groups and individuals around the world. Read more about IHEYO.
